Reliable, affordable AI for everyday automation
I use Mistral’s API (mistral-small) to automate a lot of small writing jobs: tidying short descriptions, filling in missing details, and sorting text into the right category. Mostly it runs in the background through simple scripts.
What I like
It gives me the format I ask for. When I need clean JSON back, it comes back clean every time. I tried another provider’s OpenAI-compatible option, and it quietly ignored the JSON setting instead of showing an error. Mistral just works.
It’s easy to switch to. It uses the same API format as OpenAI, so moving over took three settings: the address, the model name and the key. I tested two other providers on the same day and came back to Mistral both times.
The small model is enough for most tasks. For short, clear jobs it’s quick, consistent and cheap enough to run in bulk without watching the bill.
What could be better
You have to pace your requests. I leave a few seconds between calls, so big batches take a while. That’s fine for background work, but less ideal if you need answers instantly.
For long or careful writing, I’d use a bigger model. Small works best for short, well-defined tasks.
Bottom line
If you want an AI that handles lots of small, structured tasks and returns them in the right shape every time, Mistral is an easy choice. If you need fast answers at high volume, check the rate limits first.
